"...this former Merce Cunningham dancer—a powerhouse and a truly electric stage presence—performs his new collaborative duet, “Les Communs,” at La MaMa. A collaboration about collaboration..."

- The New Yorker

Choreography By Cedric Andrieux & Christophe Ives
Here they are, on an island. In fact, they have to build this island from scratch.  They’ve known each other for a long time, they’ve never lost touch, but now something else is in play. They have to meet again, as if it was the first time. They need to show the other what sort of trace they leave behind, to erase it, to draw it one more time.  What is at stake for them is to find a common ground, to invent their own way of being together.

How To Deliver An Afghan Hat

Concept, Design, Direction By Yoshiko Chuma
The School Of Hard Knocks

Kit Fitzgerald (video paintings/animations), Christopher McIntyre (sound score composition), Miriam Parker (interviewer/dance) with Chris Chochrane, Rebeca Medina, and surprise guests.

Performers interact, but not directly – a parallel to incidents of our life experience and a metaphor for “endless, continuous circles of life and war.” Mountains of correspondence, a nightmare of miscommunications, frayed emotions, botched promises, excuses, and cultural challenges, pinpointing the most important experiences and emotions of how the audience perceives and understands the results of war and why.

There Might Be Others

Choreography By Rebecca Lazier in collaboration with the performers

There Might Be Others is loosely based on the aleatoric score and performer instructions for Terry Riley’s In C.  Dancers begin with 21 set movement modules and follow a set of rules to compose the piece in performance.  Performers include Sernaz Demirel, Pierre Guilbault, Cori Kresge, Vincent McCloskey, Christopher Ralph, Anna Schon and Tan Temal. No two performances will be the same.

Particular Mysteries: A Dance Cabaret
La MaMa Moves! Dance Festival

May 16 – May 18
Fri & Sat at 10pm & Sun – 5:30pm
The Club

Shared Program: Elena Demyanenko, Dai Jian, Emmanuelle Huynh, Ellen Fisher, Kia Labeija

A program of short works which particularly lend themselves to a cabaret setting.  The flowing, loose-limbed, technically rigorous movement vocabulary of Elena Demyanenko and Dai Jian, both distinguished alumni of the Trisha Brown Dance Company; the angular, mysterious, sensually delightful dance-theater of veteran choreographer Ellen Fisher; the physically arresting presence of Kia Labeija, who conjures the singular history of the House of Labeija and its iconic scenes of performance, nightlife, fantasy, and community; and the sly, mischievous evocation of cabaret performer Dalida, a popular icon of the 1960s, deliciously embodied by French-Vietnamese choreographer/performer Emmanuelle Huynh (Part of Danse: A French-American Festival of Performance and Ideas).

La MaMa Galleria: Still Life With

May 9 - June 1, 2014
Wed - Sun 1:30pm to 7:30pm
Opening Reception: Friday May 9th, 6 - 9pm

La MaMa’s upcoming exhibition, Still Life With, explores the affinities and unique divergences in the artistic practices of three artists: Nicole Cherubini, Adriana Farmiga, and Erica Svec. The exhibition was initiated by this group of artist-friends, and further developed in conversation with curator Dean Daderko. Their works in ceramic, painting, drawing, and sculpture embrace hybrid forms for their oddity, fluidity, and humor.
