DANCERS AMONG US

May 7 - 8, 2013
8 - 10pm

Live Photography Shoot
May 7, 2013
7:30pm

Grace Building Plaza
1114 Avenue of the Americas

Shooting for over three years across the United States, photographer Jordan Matter documented dancers in everyday situations in some of the most unlikely of places: outside a Las Vegas wedding chapel, in a rare Seattle blizzard, at a New York Yankees game, in Joshua Tree National Park, and more. This body of work became the instant New York Times best-selling book, Dancers Among Us. For two nights Matter’s stunning and whimsical photographs will be projected onto the surface of the Grace Building, creating a larger-than-life experience that offers a deeper look into familiar settings and ultimately celebrates all aspects and emotions of everyday life.

Get a behind-the-scenes glimpse on Tuesday night as Matter photographs members of STREB Extreme Action Company!

TRANSported features two site-specific, interactive installations housed within and utilizing the unique features of the 20-foot shipping container. Presented as part of the New Museum’s IDEAS CITY Festival 2013, both projects relate to the Festival’s theme of “Untapped Capital.” Habitat For Artists, an artist collective based in New York’s Hudson Valley, transforms the simple metal box into a vehicle for dialog and conversation in their piece called Art Pac-Kit. Two hybrid studios and a central hub for shared engagement become the ever-changing spaces for a series of public interactions with groups such as Solar One and the Hudson Valley Seed Library as well as individuals that explore aspects of self-reliance... Tender (2012–13) is a sculptural installation that combines the playful element of risk-seeking behavior with a performative tutorial in money-making. The objective of the piece is to illustrate the physical and cultural origins of value and gauge the viewer’s response to the under-recognized act of its generation. A hybrid coin striker/bill printer, Tender will mint a proprietary currency that commemorates the exhibition, and functions like a lottery, wherein the currency is the “ticket” and the sculpture itself is the prize...
