The Playground NYC allows dancers to experience various choreographic styles and ideas, engage with a new community of dancers, and gather resourceful information and inspiration from the array of choreographers involved. In turn, established choreographers are paid for their creative investigations, are given free space to explore new movement with professional dancers, and are provided with the opportunity to establish relationships with new dancers and fellow choreographers.
Class Description:
This practice is an integration of energetic and imagistic building centered around listening to and channeling personal need. We will utilize restorative movement research to delve deeper into our personal energy pathways, heighten our injury awareness and preventions, and hone in on individual movement signatures. We will apply workshopped discoveries to form through phrase-work, and class will include a group-heal reiki session led by Mikey (optional). Despite the energetically gentle nature of this workshop, physical rigor and challenge will be present and contingent on the participant's comfort level. The goal of this practice is centerring, restoration, and injury/trauma-free range of motion and imagination.
Bio:
Mikey Morado (He/They) is a queer movement artist of Native American and Mexican-American descent. A native of Colorado, Mikey received their BFA in Dance from Marymount Manhattan College where they performed work by Mark Morris/Megan Williams, Cherice Barton, Anthony Ferro, Chase Brock, and Beniot-Swan Pouffer. While attending, they began an apprenticeship position for Sidra Bell Dance New York, joining the company full-time after graduating undergrad in 2013. They have performed as a solo artist and in collaboration with their partner, Mark Caserta, for numerous platforms including Boston Dance Festival, Gotham Dance Theater, Place des Arts/Springboard Danse Montreal, Wanderlust Dance Festival, and Austin Dance Festival. Mikey was co-director and co-choreographer of the Pre-Professional program/The Thriving Artist Project through Dance Industry Performing Arts Center in Dallas, TX where they were also resident photographer, lighting and sound designer/operator, and stage manager for the White Theater. Alongside Mark Caserta, they have choreographed and produced stage elements for numerous installation performances, site-specific works, and evening-length productions including a recent commission from Dark Circles Contemporary Dance for their piece DREGS, featuring music by SLOWDANGER. Most recently, Mikey presented their solo work HYPERULTRA for Queer Noise hosted by Verbal Animal They are currently an Assistant Adjunct Professor of Dance at University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and a collaborating artist with BigKid Dance. Mikey is a certified Reiki practitioner.
