Dance on the Lawn

“Dance on the Lawn” celebrates dance in New Jersey and aims to increase exposure to dance by bringing professional and emerging companies, plus students of dance from around New Jersey together in a community setting that is free and open to the public. Since their inception in 2014, they have presented New Jersey School Performing Groups, New Jersey Professional Companies including Randy James’ 10 Hairy Legs, Maurice Chestnut’s Dance Therapy and Donna Scro’s Freespace Dance, plus New York Professional Companies including Seán Curran Company, Janice Brenner and Dancers, works by Troy Powell (Artistic Director, Ailey II), Ballet Hispanico Dos and DanceGrandMoultrie. Additionally, each year they select and support an “Emerging Commissioned New Jersey Choreographer” with performance opportunities guided by a mentor. Robert Mark Burke was chosen in 2015 and Kyle Marshall is the 2016 recipient. Charmaine Warren and Laura Marchese are the guiding force behind “Dance on the Lawn.” Their SummerStage performance will feature dancers Gentry Isaiah George, Kyle Marshall, Robert Mark Burke.

For SummerStage 2016, choreographer Robert Mark Burke presents “sheath,” a duet set to the music of Max Richter through the “2015 Jersey (New) Moves choreography” award. Robert Mark Burke also choreographed “The Dance Break,” which is a group work set to the music of The Manhattan Transfers through the “2015 Dance on The Lawn Emerging Choreographer’s” award. This dance tells the story of adolescent heartbreak. Whether it is a boy longing for a girl who turns her back on him and falls into the arms of another, or a girl flirting but then changing her mind and leaving the boy wooing her.

Kyle Marshall will perform an excerpt of a new piece he choreographed entitled “Gray.” The music is groovy, with some hip hop influenced sounds and will feature the dancers Dare Ayorinde, Kyle Marshall and Myssi Robinson.

ZEST Collective will perform several pieces: “Crying in The Chapel,” with choreography by Gentry Isaiah George with Crystal Lynn Rodriguez, Stephanie Williams and Emma Fitzsimmons, featuring dancer Marcus William. The dance will be performed to music by Elvis Presley. An Excerpt of “Reverie,” with choreography by Gentry Isaiah George, featuring dancers Nami Kaigaishi and Mariusz Kujawski. The dance will be performed to music by Alex Heffes and Matthew Barley. “Suddenly There’s A Valley,” with choreography by Gentry Isaiah George, featuring dancer Giulia D’Antoni. The dance will be performed to music by Gogi Grant. An excerpt and world premiere of “Inferno” with choreography by Gentry Isaiah George with Devin Packard and Mariusz Kujawski, featuring dancer Reo Suzuki. The dance will be performed to music by Olivier Lecoeur. “How to Fly:  Module II” with choreography by dance artists Emma Fitzsimmons and Mariusz Kujawski. The dance will be performed to music by DJ Felix.
