SINGAPORE DANCE COMPANY TO DEBUT IN NEW YORK
(Singapore) – After successful runs in two (02) international dance festivals in Indonesia and Thailand in 2014, Maya Dance Theatre (Singapore) is set to debut its latest work, RANDOM CHAPTERS, on 14 June 2015 at Kaatsbaan International Dance Centre, 120 Broadway, Tivoli, New York 12583, USA. Random Chapters is a full-length contemporary dance production that echoes the diverse artistic voices of individuals, reflecting different moments of emotions and expressed through Asian body culture and inter-cultural nuances. Like the chapters of a book, dancers will enact the long narratives through movements to connect the audiences to the different moments of each of the stories in the chapters.
Created almost a year ago through a unique collaboration of varied dance makers from Asia: Danang Pamungkas (Indonesia), Kavitha Krishnan (Singapore), Shahrin Johry (Singapore), Bernice Lee (Singapore), and Star Guo (Singapore/ China) and the company collaboration (2014) with New York based dance artist and choreographer, Janis Brenner.
Random Chapters features dance artists: Shahrin Johry, Bernice Lee, Eva Tey, Star Guo and Phittaya Phaefuang, a Bangkok based Norwegian dance artist with artistic direction by Kavitha Krishnan.
Random Chapters marks the second invitation for Maya Dance Theatre to perform at Kaatsbaan International Dance Centre in Tivoli, New York, USA, with the upcoming performance specially featured to open the summer residency dance programme at the centre.
In 2014 Maya Dance Theatre collaborated with two renowned dance artists: Dr Sun Ock Lee (South Korea/ USA), founder of Zen Dance and Janis Brenner, artistic director Janis Brenner and Dancers (NYC/ USA). The collaborations were presented at 92Y, NYC and Kaatsbaan International Dance Centre, NY respectively in October 2014.
In addition to the presentation of Random Chapters, Maya Dance Theatre will also be presenting a showing on 15 June 2015 at Mark Morris Dance Group, Cole Studio, 4th Floor, 03 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217. The showing will feature a special collaborative work-in-progress dance performance between Maya Dance Theatre and New York based dance artist, Esme Boyce (Janis Brenner & Dancers, NYC, USA), and other works by Maya Dance Theatre with International choreographers: Gil Kerer (Israel) and Danang Pamungkas (Indonesia) along with 2 new works by Kavitha Krishnan and Shahrin Johry from the company. The work-in-progress showing will commence at 2.30pm and admission is by donation.
