Music for Choreographers & Dancers with Jonathan H. Katz
Jonathan Howard Katz Jul 26, 2015 - Aug 30, 2015; Sun
11:30 AM - 1:00 PM
This workshop is intended for choreographers and dancers who would like to listen more closely and meaningfully to music in order to spark their imagination and enhance their own artistic work. We'll examine a variety of musical elements, such as consonance and dissonance, rhythm and meter, scale and key, phrase, texture and space, and musical form, in non-technical ways to help students build an awareness of and sensitivity to these elements in the music they encounter. Throughout, we'll keep in mind practical and artistic issues that may come up when working with musicians and recordings. Each class will include both lecture and active exploration to give students the opportunity to discover ways that they can distinguish and express these musical ideas in their bodies.
The ability to read music is not a requirement. Material will build over the six weeks, but drop-ins are welcome and would not be at a disadvantage.
Composer and pianist Jonathan Howard Katz is the co- founder and artistic director of Periapsis Music and Dance, an organization dedicated to cultivating a new collaborative repertoire between choreographers and composers, musicians and dancers. He's received commissions from New Music USA, Concert Artist Guild, and others, and is the recipient of the Robert Helps Prize and a Jacob K. Javits Fellowship. Through Periapsis, he's collaborated with numerous choreographers as composer, pianist, conductor, and producer, and continues to develop resources to serve the community at the intersection of music and dance. Jonathan holds a Doctor of Music degree in piano performance from Northwestern University and additional performance degrees from New England Conservatory and Indiana University.
