Dixon Place Presents Femmes

Dixon Place presents
FEMMES
KAREN BERNARD | REBECCA PATEK | MICHAL SAMAMA
NOVEMBER 17TH, 2012 @ 7:30pm
Karen Bernard presents Suspending and Other Tricks draft 4, in which distractions can be a fanciful costume, escaping conversation, a window of shadow and light and death defying movement. The work was made possible through residencies at Blank Canvas, Firkin Crane, Cork City, Ireland and Liguria Center of Arts and Humanities, Bogliasco, Italy and feedback session through Fieldwork and LiftOff.
Rebecca Patek presents Local merges experimental comedy and dance. Layers of irony seek to shift the audience's perceptions and provoke a critical discourse about identity, sexuality and the question of American culture. The work was made possible, in part, through the Movement Research Artist-in-Residence Program, funded in part, by the Leonard and Sophie Davis Fund and by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
Michal Samama presents A piece of Meat/ Stuck in my Throat in which flesh - at once our innermost and an unremarkable raw material, is no different then the animal meat that we process and consume on an industrial scale. We are all equal before the butcher's knife. The work was made possible, in part, through the Movement Research Artist-in Residence Program.
Karen Bernard began studying dance at age three with her father, Steven Bernard, a company member with 20th century pioneer, Charles Weidman. She grew up in a household which incorporated her father's dance school, with students crossing through the family space, deeply engraining performance throughout her life. As an artist and the Founder and Director of New Dance Alliance (NDA), she teaches, lectures and serves on advisory panels across the U.S., Canada and Europe. This cross-pollination strengthens an ongoing social dialogue among international artists. That commitment is fully brought to life in NDA's justly-renowned Performance Mix Festival. Bernard is a USA Projects Artist.
Rebecca Patek is currently an Artist in Residence at Movement Research. Past residencies include Dance Theater Workshop (now New York Live Arts) as part of Fresh Tracks Performance and Residency Program, Atlantic Center for the Arts with Master Artist Susan Marshall and Earthdance as part of E/merge Artist Residency.
