Naomi Goldberg Haas/Dances for a Variable Population (DVP) brings Out to In highlighting work from the company’s outdoor performances rethought for the Joyce SoHo stage. The performance mixes senior citizens with professional dancers and explores how these diverse groups can learn from one another about the nature of movement and expression. DVP will also present Short Bits set to a collage of ideas from Radiolab WNYC. Both works unite performers, ages 22-81, in rich, colloquial movements that erase the traditional boundaries between dancers and non-dancers. Featured artists will include internationally known visual artist Jackie Ferrara and downtown dancers Jamie Graham and Ani Javian.

DANCES FOR A VARIABLE POPULATION (DVP) was founded in 2005 and is directed by Naomi Goldberg Haas. Working with professional dancers and diverse communities, DVP creates theatrical dance incorporating children who thought dance was only on MTV, persons with disabilities who thought dance would deny them, and seniors who thought dance was beyond them. Through performances and community collaborative programs, the company aims to erase the border between dancer and non-dancer. DVP has been critically and popularly received in venues in New York City including The Public, Joyce SoHo, the 92nd Street Y, Dance New Amsterdam, and outdoor festivals at Chase Plaza, Governors Island and Battery Park. DVP also performs site specific work at non-traditional venues such as the Whitehall Terminal for the Staten Island Ferry, Washington Square Park, the Educational Arts Center in New Haven, PS 21 in Chatham NY, and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. The company is supported by the Harlem Arts Alliance, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. Most recently, DVP had the honor of being the first dance company commissioned by the Friends of the High Line for performances of Autumn Crossing.
NAOMI GOLDBERG HAAS has worked in concert dance, theatre, opera and film. She has collaborated with such artists as the music ensemble The Klezmatics, composers Michael Nyman and Max Richter, and directors Brian Kulick and Oskar Eustis. She choreographed the world premiere of Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner's It’s An Undoing World (excerpts can be seen in the documentary film Wrestling with Angels directed by Frieda Mock). She also choreographed Mr. Kushner's A Dybbuk at the Public Theater, and plays performed at The NYSF/Delacorte Theatre, MTC and the McCarter. Her work with Silesian Dance Theater and persons with disabilities was presented at the XVI & XVII Annual International Contemporary Dance Conference and Performance Festival in Bytom, Poland and most recently at the Chutzpah Festival in Vancouver, B.C. Ms. Goldberg Haas currently teaches at University Settlement, the Harkness Dance Center of the 92nd Street Y, New York University and Dance New Amsterdam, and is on the advisory board of The Yard.
