BARYSHNIKOV ARTS CENTER PRESENTS LEESAAR THE COMPANY

Performing the N.Y. Premiere of a New Work Developed in Residence at BAC

Princess Crocodile

April 10—11, 2014

New York, NY — Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC) is pleased to present the New York-based contemporary dance group LeeSaar The Company on April 10 and 11, Thursday and Friday at 7:30PM in BAC’s Howard Gilman Performance Space. The company will perform the N.Y. Premiere of Princess Crocodile, a dynamic, highly physical work based on themes of adolescence and womanhood, which was developed in residence at BAC.

2014 marks an important milestone for LeeSaar The Company, led by co-artistic directors Lee Sher and Saar Harari, who moved from their native Tel Aviv to New York City ten years ago. Influenced by the Gaga movement language developed by Israeli choreographer Ohad Naharin, and creating works in collaboration with their “striking” (The New York Times) company of international dancers, LeeSaar has steadily built a reputation for “fascinating excursions into territory whose physical and emotional atmospheres are a coolly seething whole” (The New York Times). Having performed to critical acclaim at renowned venues in New York City and throughout the U.S., including American Dance Festival and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, LeeSaar The Company celebrates a decade of artistic achievement with the N.Y. Premiere of their latest work.

Princess Crocodile, a work drawing from contradictions in female identity, was developed during a two-week creative residency at BAC in April 2013. The company received a second, weeklong production residency at BAC prior to the work’s premiere at the American Dance Institute in February 2014. Set to a diverse sound score ranging from music by Stravinsky to the German electronic composer AGF, LeeSaar The Company’s seven female dancers embody an array of complex emotions, creating intricate portraits of becoming a woman. With “space-filling physicality,” (The Washington Post) the dancers explore the path to self-discovery. Princess Crocodile is performed by Hsin-Yi Hsiang, Motrya Kozbur, Hyerin Lee, Jye-Hwei Lin, Delphina Parenti, Candice Schnurr, and Isabel Umali, with costumes by Naomi Luppescu, and lighting and stage design by Avi Yona Bueno (Bambi).

LeeSaar The Company will perform the N.Y. Premiere of Princess Crocodile on April 10—11, Thursday and Friday at 7:30PM at Baryshnikov Arts Center’s Howard Gilman Performance Space, located at 450 W. 37thStreet between 9th and 10th Avenues. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online or by phone: BACNYC.ORG / 866-811-4111.
