ISLAND MOVING CO. PELL SCHOOL RESIDENCY SUPPORTED BY THE
SECRET GARDEN TOUR
Newport’s resident ballet company, Island Moving Co., will continue its curriculum integrated creative movement residency for Newport’s Pell School third graders from January 12-16, 2015. The residency is supported by the Benefactors of the Arts’ Secret Garden Tour which uses the proceeds from its popular spring and fall garden tours to support arts and cultural programs for Aquidneck Island public schools. “We are grateful that the Secret Garden Tour can again help us work with the faculty at the Pell School to unite text, music and movement around in an intensive week of writing and movement workshops,” said Artistic Director Miki Ohlsen. “The teachers are excited about illustrating the concepts of Perseverance, Safety, Compassion and Respect through the children’s creativity, as these themes are so integral to the culture of the newly unified elementary school. We will work with text the children create in their classrooms to help them make dances for a presentation for the entire school population.”
The Island Moving Co. dancers will also be at the Pell School in January creating the pilot residency for the new math-based creative movement curriculum created through a grant from the Frances R. Dewing Foundation. The pilot program, which includes workshops with the second grade teachers, will create tools for the teaching of math concepts to Pell School’s second graders. The residency is supported by the RI State Council on the Arts.
Island Moving Co. also continues its five year tradition of creative movement programs for Newport County third graders with residencies in Jamestown and Middletown this winter. The Island Moving Co.’s creative movement programs are supported by David and Leslie Reed and the North Family Trust.
