Butler is a dance and choreographic artist inspired by her experiences with varying companies such as Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, and Abraham.In.Motion. The interwoven core aspects of these personal experiences fuel the insight into her teaching and her work. Rena’s focus for class is rooted in inquisition, intuition, and insouciance vs. inhibition. Her class is constructed of various tools to facilitate personal investigation and expression through movement. The class begins with guided imagery, exploring both fluid and stabilizing exercises to inform various structures in the body. It then flows into dynamic phrasing that encompasses improvisational tasks, floor work, detailed gesturing, musicality, and more.
Rena Butler hails from Chicago, IL. She currently is a dancer and choreographic fellow for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. She has previously danced in companies such as Kyle Abraham/Abraham.In.Motion, Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company, David Dorfman Dance, Manuel Vignoulle/M-Motions, Yara Travieso, and The Kevin Wynn Collection. Butler trained at The Chicago Academy for the Arts, studied overseas at Taipei National University of the Arts in Taiwan, and received her BFA from SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Dance. Butler's choreography has been presented at The New Orleans Museum of Modern Art in collaboration with Academy Award-winning jazz composer, Terrence Blanchard, CHTV Stories in Switzerland, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and more. Butler currently serves on the consortium for Chicago Dancemakers Forum, and in 2019, was the recipient of the Prince Grace Award for Choreography.
