This season, Ronald K. Brown / Evidence will present a program that includes the New York premiere of The Subtle One, set to music by the extraordinary jazz pianist Jason Moran and Dancing Spirit, a tribute to the legendary Judith Jamison and her profound influence, which will be performed by guest artist Matthew Rushing. Fusing the form and rhythms of African dance with contemporary choreography, the program features works depicting human struggle and triumph. Among these are audience favorites Torch, High Life, and Ife/My Heart, a piece “catching the elastic twistiness and rhythmic exactitude” of African dance while displaying “a mature gentleness” (The New York Times) that is Brown’s alone.
