Shen Wei Dance Arts Internship Opportunity
Company:
Shen Wei Dance Arts
Shen Wei Dance Arts (SWDA) is an internationally renowned contemporary dance company under the direction of the Chinese-born, American choreographer and visual artist Shen Wei. The interdisciplinary, culture-bridging, movement-based work Shen Wei makes for his company draws on influences as varied as traditional Chinese culture and arts; European surrealism; American high modernism; and the ritual power of ancient drama. He creates dances for the stage with the compositional rigor of a visual artist (typically designing his own sets, costumes and make-up), incorporating vivid colors, striking design and imaginative use of space into theatrical, kinetic paintings. Often staging his dances on a grand scale with a high level of production detail, his works are celebrated for their “gorgeous visual imagery” (The London Times).
SWDA is currently seeking college students and graduates interested in obtaining hands-on experience in non-profit arts administration for immediate, spring and summer internships. Our internship program offers an inside look into the day-to-day operations of a multifaceted, fast-paced arts organization.
Interns will have a unique opportunity to be involved in various aspects of the organization. With classes and performances occurring through the year, interns will be afforded many opportunities to gain hands-on experience in arts administration, including: planning, marketing, and organizing the Company’s Summer Dance Workshop; promoting a New York area performance; assisting with studio rentals; grant writing; and special event planning. Our dance studio and office is located on the Upper West Side with easy access to the 1 and C trains. SWDA Interns work closely with the Finance and Studio Manager, the Executive Director, and the Administrative and Development Associate.
Internships are unpaid but can be taken for academic credit. Interns should expect to work 16-24 hours per week from the SWDA office, located at 165 West 86th Street. Typically, scheduling is flexible from Mon-Fri, 10am-6pm. For those with dance experience, an invitation is extended to attend our 2-week Summer Dance Intensive and Company class (when offered) free-of-charge. Access to our studio, when empty is also provided. All interns will have the opportunity to observe the company in rehearsals and attend NY area performances.
