Some Very Good Years
Company:
Jessica Danser/dansfolk
In an expansion of the company’s mission, “dance for the people,” Danser has included a group of young women from the South Bronx community in her artistic process. Through a series of workshops, the residents of Odyssey House, a girls-only treatment center for young women with substance abuse and other emotional/behavioral problems, have served as inspiration for, contributed movement ideas to, and learned material from, JD/df’s latest work. The result is “mixtape for some pretty good years,” a celebration of young womanhood during the hiphop generation, to a soundscore of 90s and 21st century rap and R&B overlaid with text written by the students and the company. “mixtape” reflects scenes of love, loss, nostalgia, empowerment, and unity, and will feature a guest performance by the workshop students.
