Loco-Motion Dance Theatre for Children
Young choreographers ages 5-18 present 13 original works of emerging social consciousness. Movement for Change gives audiences a glimpse into the hearts and minds of 100 children who use the medium of dance to build community and move towards justice and equality.
The students are taking a hard look at the world around them. Dances will cover a broad range of topics that will include the influence of social media on personal identity; politics as a social trend; Asian stereotyping; a dance letter to Trump; xenophobia; a parent/child dance; a piece utilizing caution and safety hazard signs as symbols of children's fears and thoughts on leaving childhood behind; and a montage on inspiring stories of teenage girls around the world who have defied and challenged gender oppression and harmful culturalpractices. There will also be a few humorous numbers! “We provide a forum for young voices to be heard,” says Pilato. “We encourage students to create material that reflects their responsibility as members of a global community, to search for fresh answers to old questions while exploring the idea that art can effect positive change. We encourage children to take risks, and we support them in their creative vision.”
