Sundays at Three: Barbara Mahler
Company:
92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Festival
The dancer, choreographer, teacher and innovator whose work is known for its spare, abstract elegance, shows two new dances: Tapestry, a solo she dances herself; and Between the Two of Us, a duet with Jamie Chandler and Jamie Graham. Guest artist Rebecca Alson-Milkman dances Mahler’s solo The Ground Underneath, set to sounds from the Brazilian rainforest and Mahler again performs in an excerpt from her 2002 work The Whispering Pages, a response to the events of 9/11. Mahler has invited friends to contribute to the afternoon’s dances as well: Rachel Thorne Germond shows her solo Scarlett; Valerie Green/Dance Entropy performs Kin; Katherine Howard dances her five short pieces to five preludes by Bruce Stark; and Leslie Satin and David Rafael Botana perform a duet. All in all, a rich and varied afternoon of dance!
