chocolatefactorytheater.org) continues its Fall 2012 season with Play By Ear, a new performance by Amsterdam based artist Rob List. Tickets are 5 and may be purchased in advance at (212) 352-3101 or on the web @ www.chocolatefactorytheater. org .Continuing The Chocolate Factory's interest in international collaboration, Play By Earfeatures anti-conceptual movement, dance, and song from the Amsterdam based American artist Rob List. Play By Ear will attempt to connect to its audience in a direct, modest and intimate way - to move them without sentiment, to foreground the actual live moment in a patient but unexpected manner. Making use of the Chocolate Factory space without disguise, Play By Ear strives to create a kind of magical event without trickery, and above all to let the work and the moment speak for itself.
Based in Amsterdam for the past twenty years, Rob List has worked both solo and together with young dancers, visual artists, filmmakers and sound designers to create abstract but emotionally-charged performances in galleries and theaters throughout Europe. In 2010 he was a month-long resident artist at Parker’s Box in Williamsburg, featuring the peripheral performance On the Balcony. Play By Ear features performances by Rob List, Constance Neuenschwander, and Tian Rotteveel.
Rob List worked in the downtown theater and club scene in New York in the early 80s. He moved to Europe when Reagan was re-elected, where he has continued to develop a unique movement vocabulary, performing in over a dozen countries and in a wide range of venues. He is a former recipient of an NEA Choreographic Fellowship, a 2004 Fulbright Scholar, and has received numerous awards and fellowships in the Netherlands. He was movement advisor for Anna Teresa de Keersmaeker’s 2008 solo performance Keeping Still. He is currently based in Sofia and Amsterdam.
The Chocolate Factory Theater
The Bessie and Obie Award winning Chocolate Factory Theater supports the creation of new work in a variety of disciplines including theater, dance, music, multimedia and the visual arts. The Factory’s 5,000 square foot facility is home to new work by the company’s founding artists; and (under the leadership of Artistic Director Brian Rogers) commissions and presents new work by visiting artists, providing multi-week creative residencies; dedicated access to space and technical equipment free of charge; marketing and press assistance; administrative support; and commissioning and artist fees.
