About the Work:
De Funes Dance’s Crisálida is an exploration of reflection and resolution. The works follow the soloist through her reintroduction with her past, beginning with her initial unwillingness to confront these memories, through to her ultimate reconciliation of them. The program follows a narrative arc, with the soloist’s confrontation of her past as the climax. The full program is comprised of two ensemble pieces, two solos, a duet, a trio and a sextet. The final piece culminates with the union of the dancers, suggesting that the individual they form has reconciled these parts of herself, and achieved solace.
MElder Movement Art’s Sessions in Subjugation: This movement theatre work investigates micro- and macro-aggressions within the narrative of a one-on-one counseling session and psychosocial intake. It explores how one dominate entity, typically from a place of power, influences and stifles the voice and narrative of the perceived subordinate other. Sessions in Subjugation dialogues with the audience about oppressive "gazes" often felt in settings with inherent power struggles through falling and interweaving phrase work, harnessed tension within the body, weight exchange, spoken word, and physical environment.
