WORLD PREMIERE
Me and Not Me
Choreography by Tami Stronach

Close
Choreography by Tami Stronach

Mother Tongue
Choreography by Tami Stronach

Artist’s Description: Tami Stronach Dances’s slyly anarchic brand of dance theater returns with visionary designers Jane Shaw and Deb O to present the world premiere of Me and Not Me and a new work in progress entitled Close as well as restaging of the solo Mother Tongue. In Me and Not Me a duo doggedly cycle through detachment and bonding trapped inside a delicate world of crushed yellow flowers and a dilapidated child’s’ bike which offers little hope of escape. Close explores relocation, dislocation, proximity, disjointedness, and the costs and benefits of frequent shifts in perspective. Cameras on and around the dancers expose the inner workings of the dance, embedding the audience’s eye inside the choreography. Mother Tongue is about the erosion and reconstruction of personal narratives and what experiences are stored in the body– below conscious recall –in the bones and dust of who we are.

Tami Stronach, heralded as a “choreographic doctor of the human condition” (Dance Insider) is known for creating “wickedly observant” (New York Times) dances about the search for connection. Since the formation of her company in 2000, Tami Stronach Dance (TSD) has been commissioned and presented by more than 20 venues in NYC including Danspace Project at St. Marks Church, Dance Theater Workshop, Joyce Soho, PS122, HERE Arts Center, Dance New Amsterdam, La MaMa Etc., The Flea and Movement Research at Judson Church, among others. TSD has toured to venues throughout the US and internationally to England, Australia and Mexico with upcoming invitations to Russia and Trinidad. Stronach is also regularly commissioned to choreograph for plays and musical theater productions. Stronach is a full time Assistant Professor of Dance at Marymount Manhattan College in NYC where she teaches composition and improvisation. She has also been a regular contributor to the Modern Guest Artist Series at Dance New Amsterdam as well as a guest instructor at universities including Princeton, SUNY Purchase, Long Island University, Bennigton College, Alfred University, the University of Florida and the University of Michigan. She holds a B.F.A. in Dance from SUNY Purchase College and an M.F.A. in Dance from ADF/Hollins University. In her performing career, she danced with Neta Pulvermacher, Monica Bill Barnes, Kate Weare and was a long time member of the internationally acclaimed physical theater company The Flying Machine while simultaneously developing and her own her slyly anarchic brand of dance theater.
