Trisha Brown Dance Summer Intensive
Company:
Trisha Brown
The 2015 Summer Intensive is a unique opportunity for students and professionals to inhabit Trisha Brown’s creative principles. Through technique, repertory, improvisation and composition, TBDC alumni will guide students’ investigations of the movement vocabulary and choreographic tools of Brown’s work. By engaging with Brown's rich body of multidisciplinary work, the Intensive will help dancers accomplish individual creative goals, develop movement phrases and uncover new compositional tools.
WEEK I JULY 6-10
Session I // 10am-1pm Technique & Repertory with Stuart Shugg
Lunch Break // 1-2pm Lecture & Video Showing with Todd Stone
Session II // 2-5pm Composition & Improvisation with Cecily Campbell
During the morning session of week I, students will focus towards dancing Trisha's piece Solo Olos ; learning phrase material, reversing material, using Trisha's instructions to generate our own dancing, and explore the piece's complex structure. We'll play with finding a slithery, jointed, and highly articulate way of dancing by drawing on somatic practices, improvisation, and material from Trisha's other works.
In the afternoon session of week I, students will create an improvisational score that further investigates the movement and compositional ideas introduced in the morning session. Using the Solo Olos material and structure, we will play with elements of reverse/forward movement, lining up, and the roll of a "caller". These improvisations and compositional structures will provide a lens into the ways in which the landscape of a piece can shift from moment to moment, and what drives those shifts both from the inside and the outside.
WEEK II JULY 13-17
Session I // 10am-1pm Technique & Repertory with Tara Lorenzen
Lunch Break // 1-2pm Lecture & Video Showing with Lance Gries
Session II // 2-5pm Composition & Improvisation with Lance Gries
During week II, co-taught by Tara Lorenzen and Lance Gries, will focus on Son of Gone Fishing . Created in 1981 as part of Trisha Brown's "Unstable Molecular Series" and presaging her seminal Set and Reset . Son of Gone Fishing throws the individual dancer into the role of creator, managing multiple directions of a main phrase, dancing relationships and form.
The morning session with Tara will focus on a technical warm up and learning of the main phrase material, and the afternoon session with Lance will continue with multiplying the phrase directions and we will create and practice our own group forms of this challenging work that calls on a full range of skills for the Trisha Brown dancer.
