Triskelion Arts is pleased to present Dishman + Co. Choreography in the premiere of its newest dance-theater work, Fold Rhapsody. Artist talkbacks will be held following the Friday evening and Saturday afternoon performances, and the Saturday matinee offers a Family Discount: each regularly priced ticket admits one free child (under 12), and each additional child's ticket is $5. For more information, visit www.DishmanAndCo.org or www.triskelionarts.org.

In a 65-minute series of short meditations, Fold Rhapsody packs and unpacks, straightens and crumples, creases and irons out a fused weave of futility and delight. Oscillating between intricate choreography, risky improvisations and simple repetitive vignettes, the performers move from one encounter to the next, unable to break into something new, yet gradually finding themselves changed in the doing. The contours of each section are shaped by varying materials, which the performers struggle with and within via complex task-based and expressive structures. Some antic or absurd, others lush and deeply moving, these prop works become physical tropes for a deepening exploration of boundary, freedom, isolation and intimacy. At once lament and celebration, Fold Rhapsody inhabits a place of tension in which longing can be more solid than what is finally grasped, in which futility conceives, and release is the freer for restraint.

With lighting by Andy Dickerson, Fold Rhapsody is choreographed by Elizabeth Dishman, in collaboration with the performers: Sara Gurevich, Joshua Reaver, Kensaku Shinohara, Mei Yamanaka and Caitlin Yuhas. Guitarist and sound artist Angelo Spagnolo weaves together music by Johannes Brahms with his own quixotic work in a robust sound design that both honors and peculiarizes the venerated Romantic composer.

Founded in 2001 by Elizabeth Dishman, Brooklyn-based Dishman + Co. Choreography creates powerfully resonant physical theater described as “complex skeins and cerebral dreams", "playful and provocative...raw humanity seeps in” (Creative Loafing). And Spagnolo’s “wildly endearing” work has been lauded for its “stark shifts and baroque confabulations...weaving tales through strange angles and stunning, startling juxtapositions” (Philadelphia Citypaper). This is the second collaboration between Dishman and Spagnolo, each of whom brings an ardent commitment to form, and to the breaking out of form, which fuels their keenly designed yet fiercely human work. Together, they probe the slipperiness of live performance in search of lasting things.

Originally from Colorado, Elizabeth Dishman studied Voice Performance and Dance at Emory University, and began choreographing professionally in 1996. She earned an MFA in Choreography from The Ohio State University, and in 2001 founded Dishman + Co. Choreography in Atlanta. She moved to New York City in 2005 and has embraced the city’s dares and inspirations, deepening her aesthetic voice while raising two small children, and striving to stay marginally sane. www.DishmanAndCompany.org
