TRISKELION ARTS PRESENTS

2nd Best Dance Company

December 9-11, 2021 @ 8pm

106 Calyer Street, Brooklyn, NY 11222 (Enter on Banker Street)

BROOKLYN, NY, November 3, 2021 – This is a story we know, kind of, with princes and magic and good vs evil and epic battles with ugly dragons. But it’s also something we kind of made up. And are still making up. A story we are telling right now. Even if it scares us. A story about waiting. Even if we don't know what comes next. Or if it will be worth it. Even if waiting becomes "the thing" instead of the thing we are waiting for. Suppose we tell it anyway. Suppose we tell it together.

Triskelion Arts' Presents 2nd Best Dance Company’s Slumber December 9-11, 2021. Slumber is a new evening-length work by Hannah Garner’s 2nd Best Dance Company that walks the fuzzy line between dance and play to share a well-known story about waiting: Sleeping Beauty. Slumber counters the perception that waiting is a passive state, delves into the strategy-building that occurs in limbo, and questions what is valued in live performance and, subsequently, what is valued in life itself.

2nd Best Dance Company creates, performs, and teaches physically rigorous, sometimes virtuosic, almost always slapstick dance-plays. Led by Hannah Garner, a Dance Magazine ‘25 to Watch’ awardee, 2nd Best has been commissioned by Gibney’s ‘dance-mobile series,’ GroundWorks DanceTheater, Queens Theatre, Kizuna Dance, GALLIM x CreateArt, SMUSH Gallery, and SUNY Purchase among others.

2nd Best...

-believes in art-making that is exploratory, empathetic, and goofy. -values feeling over reality, seeking truest sensations over absolute truth.

-blends humor and tragedy while tackling “topics like death and queer identity through rigorous, inventive movement and wit” (Dance Magazine).

-plays very seriously and invites audiences into that play to ask: what does it mean to be alive?

Through this work, 2nd Best continues to seek beauty in failure, explore limits of the body, and find solace in the humor of being human.

“Hannah Garner is a master of make-believe. Her mind is all rising action, dashing denouements, and clever one-liners..." (Dot Armstrong, The Dance Enthusiast)

“[Garner] tackles topics like death and queer identity through rigorous, inventive movement and wit.” (Lauren Wingenroth, Dance Magazine)

“[Garner's work] evokes smiles with its whimsy and heart pangs with its emotional honesty.” (Steve Sucato, Dance Magazine)
