Dear Friend,

I have a busy summer ahead, directing a new play and creating a new dance, and I hope you can see them both!
FIRST, THE PLAY: I am thrilled to be directing SEXTORTION, by Patrick Thomas McCarthy, a powerful and moving script I heard in development last year about an outcast whose desperate desire for "Something warm, something human, something now" drives him to hatch a scheme that draws his entire high school and its surrounding  community into a harrowing vortex. Inspired by a recent true-life "sexting"-and-extortion scandal, the play digs deep beneath the superficial, sensationalistic treatments such events receive in the media to explore adolescents' fluid sexual identity, reckless experimentation, bullying, and hidden violence. When a community chooses scapegoating over self-examination, who pays the price?

As director and designer (of lights, set, and sound), and in collaboration with fight director Galway McCullough (CombatInc.com), I am creating a highly physical, intensely choreographed production, featuring projections design by Katherine Hammond (projection designer for McCarthy's Pride RiverCrossing, winner of the 2012 festival's prizes for Best Ensemble and Best Play), and music adapted from by L.A.-based singer-songwriter Ethan Gold's 2011 release Songs from a Toxic Apartment. The extraordinary cast includes Joshua David Bishop, Justin Garascia, Andrew Gelles, Julia Hochner, Jeff Ronan, Spencer Scott, Seth Shirley, Chantal Thomson, and Joshua Warr.

NEXT, THE DANCE: I am excited to tell you that I will be performing a new duet created in collaboration with champion Irish step dancer (and member of Graham II) Timothy Kochka during a one-week residency at The Yard. This work will fulfill a longtime dream of mine, to bring together Scots Gaelic mouth music (unaccompanied songs for dancing, arranged and sung by myself) and Irish traditional step dance. More details to follow in my next newsletter.
