Notions of beauty are often determined by the culture. Western culture places a higher premium on "whiteness" and beauty versus "blackness" and beauty. My recognition of this began last year, when I realized that I had spent many years preferring "white beauty" over "black beauty." Why had I not found my own brown skin, and others like me equally as beautiful and worthy to white skin?

I was willing to spend the cost of an admission ticket both spiritually and monetarily to be associated with whiteness. I made a special effort to get a glimpse at the Mona Lisa but found an excuse not to attend a Kehinde Wiley exhibit at Brooklyn Museum. I had deep fears and prejudices against my own existence. Through this choreographic residency, I aim to think about human beauty differently. I hope to address my own notions of beauty and social conditioning while offering the viewer space to celebrate and applaud our sameness as well as our diversity.
