WORLD PREMIERE OF “A SENSE OF PLACE”
ABOUT ISLAND MOVING CO.’S OPEN FOR DANCING FESTIVAL
Rocco Michaluk’s film, “A Sense of Place,” will have its premiere at the Jane Pickens Theater and Event Center at 49 Touro Street on Washington Square in Newport, RI on Thursday, September 20, 2012. The film begins at 7pm. There is a pre-show reception with the artists and dancers of Open for Dancing at 6pm. Tickets are 5 for the movie; 5 with the reception.
The film includes the three dances that were created at Open for Dancing 2011 by Zach Morris, Marta Renzi and Christine Sandorfi. Participants in the 2011 festival came from Portsmouth Abbey School, Salve Regina University, the Newport Academy of Ballet, Island Moving Co.’s Junior Company and the community at large. “A Sense of Place” includes interviews with Open for Dancing participants, artists and choreographers, as well as footage from some of the previous four five day festivals.
Open for Dancing is Island Moving Co.’s biennial site specific dance and art festival, which takes place in Newport landscapes and involves hundreds of participants from the community, as well as improvisational performers, martial artists, ballroom dancers and audiences. In its ten year history, the festival has nurtured the creation of sixteen unique site specific works, created by dozens of choreographers and their collaborating artists. Participation in the creation of the dances is open to anyone. Hundreds of non-dancers have rehearsed and performed in the dances since 2002.
The creation of “A Sense of Place” was supported by a Kickstarter campaign and by funding from the Prism Foundation. Ticket sales from the premiere will support the post production work. For tickets, visit www.islandmovingco.org or
