WORKSHOPS
Dance & music workshops for all ages
Sat May 1, 11AM – 4PM
Westbeth Community Room, FREE!

A series of free dance and music classes inviting particants of all ages and levels of ability. The workshop element of the festival is sponsored by the Westbeth Artists Residence Council, and is free to the public. Highlight of these workshop classes is an interactive music workshop with composer Ben Manley.

About the classes:
A sound and music workshop, led by composer Ben Manley, will feature live "field recordings" of ambient sounds from the city and its people. Fluttering of wind from a microphone in front of a fan, ringing resonant frequencies of a cymbal coupled to a vibrating transducer, and jangling from pickups attached to metal snare drum snares are all music sources.  Participants will play back and evaluate recordings with respect to a quote from John Cage: "Whether I make them or not, there are always sounds to be heard and all of them are excellent."

Penelope McCourty is an interdisciplinary performing artist educator and arts administrator. She has worked with several locally and nationally known dance companies and community arts organizations, including Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, Marlies Yearby’s Movin’ Spirits Dance Theater, Elders Share the Arts, Spoke the Hub and Reggie Wilson/Fist and Heel Performance Group. "The Rhythm is a Dancer" workshop will explore various elements within the African Diaspora that heavily rely on song and rhythm, including Gumboot dance and song. This fun and engaging workshop will get participants movin' and groovin' to their own beat.

Emily Bunning is the co-founder and choreographer of the Treehouse Shakers, a dance and theater company. She had danced with numerous New York City choreographers including Aviva Geismar/Drastic Action, and has taught movement classes and workshops for kids and adults across the country. "Shaking Loose Your Story" explores storytelling through dance.  For more information visit www.treehouseshakers.com.

Lynn Marie Ruse is Artistic Co-Director of FREEFALL, a Teaching Artist in Dance for Lincoln Center, a Vinyasa yoga instructor, and an occasional costume designer. Her workshop "Contact Improvisation for Families" explores this dance form for bodies of all ages. These family partnering classes will play with free-flowing physicality. They are suitable for all ages, sizes, and experience levels. Participants should wear loose clothing and be ready to roll!

Jeramy Zimmerman is the Director of CatScratch Theatre, a scrappy band of misfit dancers. In addition to making dance works for the street and the stage, she teaches dance at Grace Church School and is a teaching artist with the Orchestra of St. Luke's. "Making Dance Out of Nothing at All" explores movement games and instant choreographic process.

All events are at Westbeth, 55 Bethune Street, New York, NY 10014
