FINAL PERFORMANCE OF MURRAY SPALDING MANDALAS
XIII
Dance performance & celebration of Spalding’s life produced by thisiswater Productions
Murray Spalding Mandalas will be performing XIII, in celebration of the late artist’s life and work, on May 27 and 28, 2011 at Danspace Project, St. Mark’s Church as part of DANCE: ACCESS and presented by thisiswater Productions.
Dancer, choreographer, teacher and founder of Murray Spalding Mandalas, Murray Spalding passed away in November, 2010. XIII is the culmination of Spalding’s life work, incorporating and synthesizing themes from Spalding’s 12 earlier Mandalas to present one unified movement Mandala. This final piece, conceptualized by her company, provides a fresh look at Spalding’s unparalleled skill creating movement choirs and coiled vortexes that breathe into a myriad of complex crossings and couplings. Unexpected spirals and bright changing footwork color the emerging Mandala as Evren Celimli’s original musical composition further mesmerizes in what viewers have called an experience “altogether closer to sacred than secular” and in what Spalding herself has called “a place between prayer and performance.”
Produced by thisiswater Productions, this performance and celebration of Spalding’s life is part of a collaboration with Mandalas to create a film of XIII. “This dance deserves a wider audience and a film process that’s as beautiful as the choreography and dance you see on stage,” says Michael Robinson of thisiswater Productions.
