"I believe there is an artist in everyone and I believe in the power of dance as a medium for
artistic expression in a personal way. I enjoy being there when that happens."
Alice Teirstein, Founder/Director, Young Dancemakers Company
A company of 18 exuberant, ethnically diverse high school dancer/choreographers, under the watchful eye of director Alice Teirstein, continues its 18th year of free performances by Young Dancemakers Company, which started on July 19th and runs through August 3rd. Both themes and music are wide-ranging and relevant to the young choreographers. In addition to their original dances, the group always learns a work by an established choreographer - this year the teens will perform an excerpt from "Scot, Queen of Marys" by Doug Elkins, music by Mio Morales. All performances end with the lively and popular "Dance With Us," in which audience members are invited onto the stage for some exhilarating post-concert improvisation.
Founder/director Alice Teirstein, a 2012 Bessie Award winner for this project, once again guides and mentors the talented youngsters. Percussionist William Catanzaro returns as Music Director, advising and accompanying at all performances.
