2013 Dance Conversations festival (opening night)
Appel looks again at the conversation between planned interactivity and that which we compose in the moment—resulting in another collection of intriguing short pieces for a small group of dancers, weaving variously-composed blends of set and improvised material. The work reflects his curiosity about how organizing structures shape, color, extend, and focus the dancing we generate to progress through them, and conversely how we can employ a fluid and responsive skill set to engage and enliven the situations we find ourselves in. Though ultimately these dances do sing their own mysteries…
