Urban Bush Women kicks off its 25th Anniversary season and a three-part retrospective of Jawole Willa Jo Zollar’s artistry with Dance Theater Workshop’s presentation of Zollar: Uncensored as part of the Season of Returns. For this event, Zollar is revisiting her early investigations into the erotic and the sensual realm of women. Zollar first explored these themes in the 1980s but found that the work was “too controversial” for touring. Zollar: Uncensored represents the first time since then that Zollar is working with her original material. The evening-length performance will feature shorter works woven throughout with two works presented in their entirety: LifeDance II: the papess… mirror in the waters, an excerpt from “Heat;” and My Female Hand, an excerpt from “Hands Singing Song.” As Zollar comments, “I have been inspired by these original, historical works that address the theme of erotic integrity. I won’t pull out the works individually, but rather will make a total statement weaving sections together. In essence, Zollar: Uncensored is a new work. I am delighted to be presenting this for our debut at Dance Theater Workshop.”
