New York, NY, August 25 – Dance Theater Workshop, the preeminent U.S. based center for contemporary dance and performance, presents Dance by Neil Greenberg in the world premiere of (like a vase). Using extravagant and full-bodied dancing, Neil Greenberg’s (like a vase) explores the tensions created by the seemingly inescapable human desire to make meaning. Six dancers engage with complex and idiosyncratic movement material — culled from videotaped improvisations, learned verbatim — that serves as both a shifting object of contemplation and a vast container for redoubled meanings. With this new work Greenberg seeks to create room for the viewer to experience performance more as one might encounter an art object… like a vase.
(like a vase) features an original score by Zeena Parkins, performed live by Parkins (harps, keyboards), Shayna Dunkelman (percussion) and Preshish Moments (electronics), lighting design by Michael Stiller, and performances by dancersJohnni Durango, Paige Martin, Luke Miller, Mina Nishimura, Colin Stilwell, and Greenberg.
“Mr. Greenberg’s artistry resonates through its confluence of the random and the necessary; the continuous stream of motion in which no one moment is particularly important and each is beautiful." - The New York Times
