Dance News: Palestinian-American Choreographer Awarded La Fabrique Chaillot in Paris
New Residency Program by Chaillot - Théâtre National de la Danse Supports Emerging Dance Talents
Samar Haddad King (Artistic Director) and company Yaa Samar! Dance Theatre (YSDT), based between New York and Palestine, have been selected to participate in the inaugural year of La Fabrique Chaillot, a new residency program by Chaillot - Théâtre national de la Danse (Paris, France) in support of emerging talents in the field of dance, with presentations for press and industry professionals on June 14 and June 22.
During their five week residency (May 22 - June 22), YSDT will develop The Keeper, a highly visual dance theater work co-created by King and playwright/director Amir Nizar Zuabi (“wrenching and shrewd… Mr. Zuabi’s harrowing script is written and performed with piercing economy” - NYTimes: Oh My Sweet Land). Created across three continents, including a residency at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York, this new evening length piece asks what it means to belong to a place, and explores humanity’s deep and complex relationship to land.
The Keeper looks at land as the repository for personal and collective memory, and digs into the layers of meaning found in - and assigned to - the ground beneath our feet. Driven by an original script by Zuabi and set in a landscape of soil, the international cast of performers is led by world-renowned actor Khalifa Natour. Together they fervently, violently, carefully unearth or bury the stories and artifacts of personal and collective history, raising questions of identity, ownership, land use, and lineage in the face of a changing environment.
