Curious about how dancers and dance-makers spend their time outside of the studio? Our friends at Pentacle have been finding answers to that very question by talking to their Gallery artists about life outside of dance. To learn more about each of these artists and their lives both on and off stage visit Pentacle’s new blog Gallery Portraits…

In his spare time, Brian Carey Chung is a poet. With an MFA in Creative Writing from NYU, he is currently working on his first book of poems. Asked about how he got into writing poetry, he says, “When I actually started to write down my own ideas and images, I was about 25 and in love, and the world seemed to me lost for words. At 25, I was confident enough to believe that I could supply it with some.” To learn more about Brian outside of the studio check out Gallery Portraits.

Kyla Barkin is a renaissance woman. A photographer, painter, dance-maker, and singer-songwriter, she is versed in the arts. Her latest pursuit outside of dance, however, has nothing to do with the arts at all. Kyla is the Secretary Treasurer of the Foundation for a Just Society. The foundation provides financial support to programming, advocacy, and education for women and girls in areas of most need around the world. Kyla had been searching for an opportunity to give back to society when she was invited to volunteer in this position. “What a blessing of an opportunity,” she says. “I don’t have the money to give back in this way but I can do so through the foundation.” For more on Kyla’s philanthropic involvement, tune in to Gallery Portraits October 8 – 19.
