Freeform Review:
Solo exhibition by Ruhee Lee has dynamic point of view through the fractions of pieces. Especially performing art through two performers’ movements interweaves the fractions of her art pieces with storytelling. Her art pieces interact with performers’ movements, creating infinite versatile visions. Hemisphere of crystal clear pieces responded to the performers’ movements through their hand-held lanterns. It was beautifully spoken visual language where the space was woven with relfected light.
As a storyteller, I observed her creations inspire movements and viewers choose their own narratives. By moving the square pieces, the viewers could actively choose what they wanted to create and see. I felt that the pushing and pulling of each piece mirrors our behavior with smartphone reactions — if we dislike, we push, and if we like, we pull it closer. Unlike smartphone reactions, her works do not rely on a one-way algorithm, but are truly decided by the viewer’s own will. While we are sometimes manipulated by a world of digital signals, Lee’s works resonate with the tactile experience of touch, by inspiring imagination, and by giving way to pure instinct and basic expression.
