Choreographic Essentials, created by Helen Pickett, is a unique and immersive dance think-tank initiated in 2011. The workshop is designed to develop, cultivate and expand the compositional / choreographic and performance skill-sets of the participants. The program is geared toward professional and professional aspirant dancers, age 18 - 27. A 6-day intensive, Choreographic Essentials, draws from the extensive experience of Helen Pickett, and a guest teacher/choreographer. This experience provides a forum and offers guidance that reinforces the creative process, risk-taking, artistic autonomy and professional development.

Participants will not only learn how to delegate power and manage time within a group, as a Choreographer and as a dancer, but also learn how to absorb and retain more information, using the ideas of First Choice/Best Choice and Coordination Negotiation. Choreographer and dancer are two very different positions, giving the dancer insight to both sides of the studio. A particular emphasis will be placed upon the generation of new ideas, and the subsequent actualization of the material generated by the participants, under the tutelage of Ms. Pickett. The final day of the workshop will feature a showing of the work created by participants.

Choreographic Essentials Workshop June 9 – 15, 2019

How to Apply

Email application materials to UNCSAchoreoin@gmail.com. Application deadline for the 2019 program is March 28, 2019. In the body of the email include your name, address, email and phone number, and if you will need housing. *Please note that housing is limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Include the following attachments to your application email:

  • Your choreographic C.V. in pdf format
  • Include a link to a video of your choreographic works.  This video can consist of a self-choreographed solo, group performance, and/or rehearsal footage.  We want to get a sense of your movement and choreography.

We will respond within two weeks of receiving your application.

Once Accepted:

Each choreographer will be responsible for creating 3 minutes of choreography.  In addition, each participant will dance in 2 - 3 pieces of choreography.  This will allow each student to experience being both a choreographer and dancer.

Students will have 6 pieces of music to choose from.  Each student is required to have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice of music.  All students are required to write a paper, minimum 2 pages, on their concept, choice of music and what they want to accomplish during the workshop.  Final decision on music is made by Helen Pickett and is based on the paper.  *Papers are due via email, at least 3 days before the start of the workshop.
Choreographic Essentials workshop culminates in a public in-studio showing of each choreographer's work.
